Avocent Announces Performance and Security Enhancements to DS1800(TM), a KVM OVER IP(TM) Solution for Server Management
Huntsville, AL., June 6, 2001 Avocent Corporation (NASDAQ: AVCT) today announced it has made significant improvements to its DS1800 KVM over IP(tm) solution for server management. This system gives IT managers the unique ability to remotely access multiple racks of servers through an Ethernet connection, leveraging a company's existing investment in its network infrastructure. Additionally, the DS1800 video processing and compression algorithms minimize the required network bandwidth to transmit keyboard, video, and mouse (KVM) signals. The DS1800 leverages industry standard DES encryption during transmission and provides virtually unlimited scalability along with an easy-to-use GUI interface.

"The DS1800's enhanced performance and security features make it easier than ever to securely access and control any server in a network, without requiring a company's IT talent to be physically in the same building as the server," said Gary Johnson, senior vice president of worldwide sales and marketing for Avocent. "This flexibility and the minimal bandwidth requirements enable administrators to easily manage and reconfigure data centers as they add servers and users, requiring a fraction of the complex cabling found in other KVM systems."

Avocent's DS1800 is a KVM over IP server management solution that provides administrators complete access to virtually an unlimited number of servers or devices in their network, from any location. The DS1800 supports multi-platform environments, including Sun, USB and PS/2, and a variety of operating systems such as Windows 95, 98, NT, Windows 2000, Linux, NetWare and Solaris to name a few. Additionally, customer support is now available seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

The enhanced DS1800 security model features four components: user authentication, permissioning and access control, industry-standard DES encryption, and NT security features. Avocent's exclusive DSView user interface provides a consolidated view of all servers connected to the DS1800. Managers can view multiple screenshots of servers in their data center for 24/7 server management.

"We will soon be introducing additional enhancements to our DSView software which will enable administrators to use DSView to manage servers connected to the DS1800, as well as serial devices connected through Avocent's CPS800/1600 device," Johnson continued. "The combination of these devices provides a significant connectivity solution for IT managers who need one secure interface for servers, routers, hubs, firewalls and power switches which must be monitored 24/7 in their data centers, from any location in the world."

To maximize flexibility and provide IT managers with the freedom to configure systems to meet their needs, Avocent has designed the DS1800 to accommodate cascaded KVM switches in a network environment. DS1800 is designed for seamless interoperability with Avocent's proven 8, 16 and 24-port KVM switches, including: OutLook 140ES, 180ES, 280ES, 1160ES, 2160ES, 4160ES and AutoView 200, 400, 416 and 424 KVM switches.
